Otros Mundos is the second album of all-instrumental space rock by Spanish trio Cuzo. Very enjoyable it is too, and for those who enjoy the genre then the album is highly recommended.
For me, Cuzo avoid many of the pitfalls that this genre has lying in store for unwitting artists. One of the major hazards befalling the all-instrumental space rock genre is that of overplaying the jam, of overstaying your welcome, getting so absorbed in your own trip that you forget this is actually a disc, not some hippie festival you're attending. On Otros Mundos, the longest track, "mutante continuo", is about 8 minutes long, there are three coming in at about 3 minutes, and the whole album is about 35 minutes long. Perfect! Enough for the listener to enjoy the music and the musicianship without starting to think about the fluff in his navel! Avid readers may recall that I've "named and shamed" the perpetrators of such crimes before, so I won't embarrass them here.
The trio are Jaume Pantaleon (guitars, effects), Alvaro Gallego (bass) and Pep Caravante (drums).
The music is good. The compositions vary in intensity and sound, with the lead instrument being varied as the jam progresses, providing decent variety throughout the album. My favourite moment is the guitar riffing during the latter half of "coche imaginario", with the clever "robots en movimiento" the overall best track.
All-instrumental space rock isn't for everyone, but if you are a fan of the genre, then you'll want to listen to this band: enjoy!
