Eagle Rock's Rory Gallagher reissue parade continues with the sophomore solo album Deuce, originally released in 1971. This one's a bit more acoustic in nature, as the legendary Irish guitarist shows off his deft fingerpicking skills on the daring opener "I'm Not Awake Yet", the country/folk flavored "Don't Know Where I'm Going", and the rootsy "Out of My Mind". The late guitarist also flashes some brilliant slide guitar throughout Deuce, as well as his patented blues-rock phrasings.
For the most part though, the tone of Deuce is a little more sedate than on the debut and certainly much of the rest of his 70's output. Though he rocks hard on "Used to Be", "Maybe I Will", and "There's A Light" , much of what you hear on this album is more laid back blues, like on "Whole Lot of People" (featuring some sizzling bottleneck slide), the sultry "Should've Leaned My Lesson", and the bluesy yet psychedelic "Crest of a Wave", another killer slide guitar workout. Regardless of whether Rory is rocking out, delivering soothing country folk, or some sweaty blues, it's all high quality. Great guitar, great vocals, great songs, what more can you ask for?
This reissue features plenty of photos, an essay, and track by track breakdown. Deuce is another fine re-release of a classic Rory Gallagher album by the folks at Eagle Rock, and there's more to come.
