For Winter Fire is the debut album for doom/death/postrock extreme metal band Seidr. The name Seidr appears to have a connection with the Viking world, and it after hearing the CD is seems that nothing is more true than that.
Lyrically Seidr make use of the world of the Vikings. One could call their music Viking metal, but the songs have more in common with the doom sound than Viking metal.
Just 7 tracks long with a total running time of nearly 75 minutes the average song lasts more than 10 minutes. This would not have been a problem, but due to the lengthening of some of the themes this length is a bit too long.
Solos are spun out to over 4 minutes in length, making it a bit hard to listen the album in one session.
The combination of sounds is at first glance a very dubious one, but mixes alright when you listen to it.
Heavy riffing combined with pounding drums and long, very long noises. Something is to be said for this, it certainly isn't your everyday music. Seidr definitely have found something refreshing to bring to the world of Metal.
I bet that the music seen in a live environment will come out better than on CD. It sounds pure as can be, best heard very loud, and thus live sound.
Seidr have set a path for themselves, it now needs to be paved with the right tiles to become famous. The album should be considered a must for Doom/sludge metal fans
