Hæresiarchs of Dis (not a name that trips off the tongue!) is essentially a one man Black Metal band from the US; a busy one man band at that, with several releases put out under the banner in the last couple of years. Thankfully maintaining quality doesn't seem to be an issue, as this is a decent genre outing. The album intersperses lengthy songs (aggressive, intricately played and well paced, all topped off by piercing, high-register vocals; early Emperor are clearly an influence) with more atmospheric segue pieces, ranging from Gregorian Monk-style chants ('Onward Through the Oculus') to extended instrumental pieces featuring melodic guitar solo's and even a vaudeville-esque organ recital ('Aut Vincere Aut Mori'). 'Grazioso Drone' is intriguing; an acoustic doomy ballad, with clean vocals. Despite the variety, the dark, slightly foreboding atmosphere is maintained throughout. Production is a shade better than you'd normally expect in this genre, too. Altogether, another good release from the reliable Moribund stable.
