Gungfly: Lamentations

According to Rikard "Gungfly" Sjöblom, in his own words, "My introduction to the world of music and especially playing it came very early in life. I used to stand by the speaker as a 3 year old, moving to (what used to be) my favorite song: "I'm So Excited" by The Pointer Sisters. My grandfather Leonard played the accordion and he noticed that I was a musical child so he convinced my parents to buy me one and it must have been when I was about three or four years old" (http://gungfly.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1&Itemid=2, 2011).

Gungfly is the side project for Beardfish's Rikard Sjöblom. Gungfly is a Swedish band made up of Sjöblom, on vocals, keyboards, guitars, basses and drums; Rasmus Diamant, bass; Petter Diamant, drums; and Maja Sweden, on trumpet.

"Someone described it as, "Like the shorter, vocal oriented songs on a Beardfish album". But we also find several influences from melodic heavy rockers in the vein of Foo Fighters or Them Crooked Vultures as much as Jethro Tull or Culpeper's Orchard or King Crimson or Opeth and even early Elton John or John Mayer!" (http://gungfly.net/index.php?option=com_content&view=frontpage&Itemid=1, 2011).

'The Game', 'And She Drives Me...', 'We Will Never Leave', and 'Sleight of Hand' were some of the highlights from the new album for me. If you like Beardfish or Gungfly's last album, Please Be Quiet, you'll probably like this new album as well.

The DVD is a great bonus included with the digi pack I received as a promo. Seeing the band live helps improve the overall understanding and emotion behind their recordings. They use English subtitles at the bottom of the screen to help translate the band 'banter' with the crowd. The tracks on the DVD are a re-arranged version of their first album, Please Be Quiet, played live. If you missed that first album, you get to hear it live when you buy this digi – pack. If you're a fan and haven't seen the band yet, you get the privilege of seeing this live DVD along with their new album. Great planning on the band's part to include this extra treat for fans. The opening track, 'Whiskers', almost had a bluesy Black Crowes feel and sound to it, which made it an early favorite. 'Rumbling Boxes' was another highlight for me. The picture can be grainy at times and they switch from color to black and white from time to time to add effect. They included an additional video for the track 'On and On', from Please Be Quiet.

Overall this is a great package for fans as well as those new to their sound. It was an incredible introduction for someone who has not heard of them before this. Definitely worth the price for all the great music and video you get.
