Christian Pabst Trio: Days Of Infinity

Christian Pabst has been a much respected jazz pianist from the tender age of fifteen when he recorded two CDs before touring England and Sicily. Now some twelve years later Pabst is working with David Andres on bass and drummer Andreas Klein as the Christian Pabst Trio, whose cool laid back jazz is stunningly well performed and on the whole quite captivating. Four of the ten tracks on the album are also augmented by the scintillating trumpet and flugelhorn playing of Gerard Presencer which brings a different dynamic to the flavour of the music on show and adding some welcome heat to what are some remarkably relaxed, yet intricate themes.

Pabst piano and Rhodes work is, as expected, of the highest order and it is the pacing and texture that he effortlessly adds to the music which raises what could have in lesser hands been pretty standard stuff, into something that makes you sit up and take notice. That poise though is replicated by Andres and Klein, with playing that builds atmosphere and drama to the music whether it be a complex seat of the pants moment, or a sparsely arranged and reflective passage. It is a hard trick to pull off convincingly, but time and again the trio all seem to be cajoling each other into building more involving and thought provoking music.

If a criticism could be aimed at Days Of Infinity, then for some it may well be that it is maybe all just slightly too considered and sedate, although when Presencer makes his trumpet and/or flugelhorn known, the vibe almost subconsciously picks up. The Christian Pabst Trio have with Days Of Infinity put together an album full of captivating ideas and interesting structures that will appeal to a broad cross section of jazz lovers everywhere.
