Byrne, David: Ride, Rise, Roar – A Live Concert Film (Blu-ray)
David Byrne was born in Dumbarton, Scotland, but has usually been associated with his current home in New York. Byrne is often credited as being one of progressive rocks most innovative artists of the 1980s and 90s, and the artist who co-founded the group Talking Heads, in 1976, in New York. He also is an artist who attended the Rhode Island School of Design and the Maryland Institute, College of Art" (http://www.davidbyrne.com/music/david_byrne_music_bio.php, 2011).
Those familiar with David's work with the Talking Heads knows that he has a talent for making innovative video that works well with the music the band had created over the years. The Talking Head's Stop Making Sense was one of the best concert videos of the 1980s. In 2002, Talking Heads were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
This Blu – Ray video is an excellent combination of video footage from the 'Everything that Happens Will Happen Today' 2008/09 Tour, with Brian Eno, one of Byrne's fellow collaborators on several projects, as well as personal interviews with David about the concept, music, and tour. The innovative way he helps choreograph dance along with ergonomic office chairs and some great modern dancers on stage is worth every penny of admission.
The music is excellent, incorporating Byrne's solo work with some of his Brian Eno collaborations and of course some of the best tracks from the Talking Heads discography. Just about every minute of this video is engaging from both a visual and well recorded live audio perspective. As a fan, you are taken behind the scenes to watch the intricate work the dancers had to practice to perform this production live on stage. You also get to watch Byrne describing the concepts to the dancers, and then help direct and choreograph the performance in practice. Then, like a VIP, involved with the entire process you are taken to the stage to watch it 'live'. The multi – direction cameras give you a view of the show not available to a regular attendee. This is above and beyond the normal, everyday concert performance. Full of action and great music. Nothing is missing.
