Born as a side project from the Prog band, Intronaut, guitarist/vocalist Sacha Dunable, wanted a vehicle for his sometimes heavy and always spacey, ambient Rock. Thus the trio that is Graviton was founded. They are very much in the vein of a Kyuss, Pink Floyd and Isis, with main focus being heavy on the experimental with odd time signatures and an overall spatialness.
Graviton are Sacha Dunableonon Guitar & Vocals, Darin Tambascio on Guitar & Bass and Derek Donley on Drums, and the atmospheric landscape that is created between these 3 guys is pretty interesting and out there at the same time. Quite mind bending, if you will. Massless is quite a subdued listen, even with the "metal" type moments that pop up throughout. The record is very organic and quite earthy in flavor with supreme overtones into the wild frontier.
Massless is heavy on atmosphere, not to say that Metal moments don't occur throughout the record, but that is not the overall point. Songs like "Quarks"have a heavy undertone that plods along and does have that Kyuss, Stoner/SpaceRock feel, while the polar opposite "Baryon" with its acoustic guitar foundation and scientific speech vocal recordings underneath, create a totally different feel. If nothing else, these guys are interesting.
The problem is "Interesting"and good might not go hand and hand with most peeps. This is very 'out there' stuff and will probably lose quite a few listeners at the gate, but it is indeed, "interesting". There are quite a LOT of bits that are very atmospheric and very spacey and while this might scare off some, others will eat this up. This is a record for the more open minded sorts, as this can come off a bit, how do I say? Pretentious?! But that is what Graviton is all about, being a side project to do what they want to do. And what they do, do is create some interestingly odd music.
