Silent Rage, The: Harvester of Souls
Greek band The Silent Rage play power metal, thankfully eschewing the more lightweight, widdle-tastic approach that seems to have become popular in recent years for something more meaty on this new E.P. Particularly noteworthy is a strong guitar sound which gives the songs some weight; the playing is good too, with some tasty solo's. Vocalist Dionisis Siglidis, whilst not a stand-out, nevertheless has a decent voice. Unfortunately, the decision to use harsh, barked vocals as a counterpoint doesn't really work, and detracts a little from the songs.
Opener 'Perished In Flames' is a good opener, sounding a little like early Iced Earth. 'Inner Scars' is fast and furious, although perhaps not memorable enough to leave too much of an impression. Stronger is the closing track 'Wings of Tragedy', which opens with flurries of quality solo's before Siglidis stretches his voice to reach the notes on the soaring chorus.
Overall, this is understandably a little rough and ready in places, given that it is an independent, self-produced release. If the band can get a little more consistency in the song-writing, and ideally ditch the harsh vocals, then things bode well for the promised full length currently being written.
