Baltimoore: Ultimate Tribute
Baltimoore, a slightly progressive and bluesy hard-rock band from Sweden comprising whoever singer Bjorn Lodin wants, marks its sixth release (not counting a re-recorded best-of collection in 2001) with 12 interpretations of classic hard rock songs – including tunes by the Michael Schenker Group ("Samurai"), Black Sabbath ("Never Say Die") and Kiss ("She"). Baltimoore sounds tight and enthusiastic here, playing these songs as if the band's career depended on it. Lodin's vocals are raspier than ever, particularly on Nazareth's "Beggars Day," Deep Purple's "Love Child" and AC/DC's "Riff Raff" – sort of like David Coverdale might sound if he swallowed Udo Dirkschneider. (Incidentally, Lodin actually did some demos with Krokus before realizing he couldn't sing high enough for that band.) Other songs Baltimoore covers here include Rainbow's "Kill the King," Montrose's "Rock Candy," Sweet's "Solid Gold Brass," Jimi Hendrix's "Freedom," Thin Lizzy's "The Rocker" and Mountain's "Mississippi Queen." Granted, Ultimate Tribute isn't very original, but at least Baltimoore has managed to breathe new life into these dusty gems.
