OK, this is a weird one and it is one of those albums that lead to an initial WTF? In an age where we are guided towards very narrow generic boundaries, it is pretty pleasing to witness those who don't wish to be confined. End of Level Boss are one such group.
The job of a good publicist is to encapsulate what the record is all about so that we (in the press/ online etc) can, to some extent re-write the press release and thus garner good reviews so let us see what End of Level Boss' people have to say for themselves shall we?
"Introducing an entirely new rhythm section since their last release, the band's flurry of angular, post-punk angst goes head-to-head with an almost progressive, technical attack on Eklectric, the album surging with nearly 54 minutes of boundary-free relentless rock, magically set to tape in a mere four days early this past Winter. Once described as "Kyuss meets King Crimson," END OF LEVEL BOSS have taken that recipe and dragged it, kicking and screaming, into an all new direction, the new album capturing the live energy and more punk attitude of the band, with elements of Motorhead and Voivod smashing their way through the surface." The only thing I would take issue with in all that is the phrase, "almost progressive," because Eklectric is very progressive, almost certainly too progressive for its own good.
There is no doubt that this is somewhat of a difficult listen but it is immeasurably more interesting and involving than most everything that passes for mainstream popular music these days. It's a shame that probably very few will hear it but if you get the chance, give it a go.
