JD Overdrive: Sex, Whiskey & Southern Blood
A quick look at the album moniker Sex, Whiskey & Southern Blood, song titles and the picture of the band in the middle of the CD booklet wearing cowboy hats and baseball caps, while quaffing bourbon and playing cards will tell you that JD Overdrive are from Poland. Yes – Poland, in fact Katowice to be precise!
Where the four lads who make up JD Overdrive got their fixation for all things Deep South I'm not sure, but this is a band paying homage nonetheless and doing it most convincingly to boot! The guitars roar and Wojciech Kaluza hurtles out Phil Anselmo like howls, gasps and grunts to perfection and with nary an accent to be heard. The big slab of guitars which makes up "Stoned To Death" shows that JD-O really have tapped into what makes this heavy, groove laden Southern Metal such a potent force and they deliver it with power, precision and potency. Unusually for European metal acts, when this unwashed mob try their hand at injecting a little humour, it actually works out pretty well, with the little sound clip quip about if "metal is the Devil's music, then at least he knows how to jam!" and the needle scratching end to their cracking take on Hendrix's "Purple Haze", accompanied by the words "Ahh wellll, yeah, uh no!" raising a smile. Don't mistake Sex, Whiskey & Southern Blood with a comedy record though, as this is one quartet as likely to spit in your face and stomp on your toes as they are shake your hand or nod a greeting.
From the booklet, where a nubile young lady struts her stuff in a cowboy hat and bikini, to the gargantuan riffs and thunderous drums, JD Overdrive make for an amazingly convincing American Southern Metal act and considering that was obviously their sole intention with this album, you really can't say fairer than that.
Looks like the East of Europe is the new South.
