Le Secret is the latest release from French duo called Alcest. You have main man Neige handling guitars, bass, keyboards and vocals, and drummer Winterhalter.
Le Secret is not really a new album, since it is the re-issue of their 2005 debut mini CD. It is the foundation of what would become their musical direction. This album is made of four tracks and last nearly an hour. You have the two original tracks: "Le Secret" and "Elevation", as well as their 2011 re-recording. It is Prophecy Productions' goal to promote music with a sense of eerie an emotion, and Alcest has own its place in its varied roster. The root of this act is black metal; while their take brings in a nice melodious and dreamy vibe. The original compositions were a bit rawer compared to the new version, which is being presented first on this album. The lengthy songs are introduced by clean arpeggios on "Le Secret" and ambient keyboards on "Elevation". They have long mesmerizing musical breaks with varied paces and distorted guitars. Neige's vocals are moving from soft clean ones to tortured, and a bit forced, raspy. I've noticed that on the original "Elevation", the rasps had more of a ghostly nature, which suits perfectly the composition. During the intro, I could hear birds and water samplings, nicely setting the mood. This is no vicious extreme music, but more the dreamy and poetic style of the black metal arts.
Le Secret is a must for Alcest's fans and a quite pleasant offering bound to please many of the more laid back and eerie music collectors out there.
