Beggar's Opera: Get Your Dog Off Me (reissue)

Get Your Dog Off Me was the fourth release (1973) from this Scottish progressive rock band, now just seeing the light of day on CD. For this album, the band took on a more hard rock approach, somewhat similar to Deep Purple, and cast aside many of the King Crimson, Spring, Moody Blues, Mellotron-soaked influences from some of the earlier material. Tracks like "Freestyle Ladies", with its aggressive attack of guitar, Hammond organ, and the fiery vocals of Linnie Paterson, and "Open Letter", rock hard, but still have a high proggy quality to them. Paterson has a voice that is very similar to Purple's Ian Gillan, especialy on the mellower tunes like the Southern Rock-tinged title track, "Morning Day", or the honky-tonk blues of "Sweet Blossom Woman." However, the prog fan will really enjoy some of the instrumentals, such as the meditative guitar piece "Requiem", or the organ/synth/Mellotron freakouts of "Classical Gas" (a real workout for keyboard player Alan Park.) The organ soaked "La Di-Da" , as well as the rocking "Turn Your Money Green", are similar to mid-period Grand Funk Railroad, while "Working Man" and the two bonus cuts, "Two Timing Woman" and "Lady of Hell Fire" stomp like vintage Uriah Heep. These two extras actually rock harder than anything else on the CD, and feature heavy guitars, raging Hammond, and aggressive vocals.

This is kickin' , aggressive hard rock with progressive flourishes, and is highly recommended!
