There are many reasons to admire Arkona; firstly, they're pretty good, secondly they put in that all important 110% effort – Slovo appears hot on the heels of the Stenka Na Stenka EP and finally, they still haven't succumbed to the temptation to sing in English which gains them more authenticity points.Slovo is a record which just demands to be listened to from beginning to end and not just dipped into. There is a somewhat bewildering amount going on within its rich textures. There's Pagan Metal, folk inflections, gorgeous melodies and much, much more.
Led by vocalist Masha Scream the lyrics apparently concern Russian history but compared to previous releases the songs are arguably less epic and less progressive. I've seen some complaints that this may alienate some fans but surely no more so than singing in Russian!
It's difficult to convey in words the music of Arkona other than to say that if you like metal of the pagan or death variety and you are of open mind then Slovo would be a welcome addition to any collection.
