Malastrana: Attimi (EP)

Malastrana's five-track 2010 EP Attimi combines alternative rock/metal and hard rock, and, while the outcome of such a combination is not always most successful, Malastrana's approach to alternative rock/metal and hard rock has, I would argue, quite positive results.

The reason is, I think, that Malastrana's emphasis on hard rock generates a more extsrospective aspect to their music rather than the introspective shoegazing tendencies that characterized a lot of alternative rock and alternative metal in the 90s.

The tracks on this release are anchored in hard rock, but are sprinkled with elements that were associated with the alternative metal of the 1990s. Thus you will find hints of funk-rock elements in some of the tracks (there is some slapping bass in the title track for instance, while 'La Sponda' features some chords that are often used in funk-rock), and the opener 'Radio Shock' features rapped vocals (in Italian), and 'Nell'Ombra' has a slight Rage Against the Machine feel to it - the vocals are sung, not rapped, but the music itself makes use of the same sort of groove that made Rage Against the Machine so popular - this also applies to the title track 'Attimi'.

Apart from the references to Rage Against the Machine, Attimi is a fairly original, but not groundbreaking, affair (though observing most conventions of popular music composition), and the musicianship is obviously very solid; the Malastrana boys certainly know how to make melodic hard rock with just enough funk-rock and alternative rock/metal elements to spice things up a bit. The five tracks on it certainly are enjoyable and should appeal to most fans of solid rock music.
