Erebus Enthroned: Night's Black Angel
Australia's Erebus Enthroned have unleashed upon the world their first full length, Night's Black Angel, a diabolically iconoclastic collection of black metal ire and grim tomes. Contained within are the staples of the genre upon which the band doesn't depend but utilises and embellishes them for a fuller and stronger impact. The dynamic range of the tracks is considerably broader than most black metal albums, incorporating mid-paced grooves, arpeggiated disharmonies and discordance, and dense, crushing, almost death metal-style riffs into the aesthetic. Of the songs, 'Blackwinged' is one of the best tracks here, its structure and dynamics is more challenging, and the three line spoken word section leading into a crushing assault on the king of heaven is pure black menace. The rampant riffing of 'Nil (Solve non Coagula)' shows a band that can shift into the high gears in a breath. The instrumental 'Temple of Dispersion' is a darkly atmospheric and chillingly ambient piece. And the incantations of the title track, the final wave of the attack, call upon a host of demonic deities for a battle painted across a track that moves through each phase of the complex structure smoothly as the track spawns ever-deepening stratum of wrath. Of particular note are Decay's lead work and Nihilifer's vocals. The lead lines on 'Virus' and the title track add a melodic edge to already razor-sharp tracks. And Nihilifer's phrasing distort and contort his words to give them a more demonic shape, the predominantly alternating rhyme schemes lending the very impressive lyrics a more direct and threatening menace. There are no hidden depths to this album. What you hear is what you get, and what you hear is pure ravaging and nihilistic black metal rage.
