What do you get when you combine the styles of Metallica, The Sword, Grand Magus, Black Sabbath, and Mastodon? Well, probably something like Montreal's Barn Burner. Their sophomore release is titled Bangers II-Scum of the Earth, and continues on with their crusty, molten sludge metal n thrash hybrid found on their solid debut. Though there are a ton of bands doing this retro/stoner/thrash thing these days, it's hard not to fall into the heavy grooves of "Gate Creeper", "Dark Side of the Barn" and the massive title track, all which show the songwriting talents of the band as well as their musical muscle. And with song titles like "Keg Stand and Deliver" and "Skid Marks the Spot", Barn Burner are sure to be a hit with beer swilling, hemp smoking college kids everywhere. If you are looking for slightly more intelligent fare, you've probably come to the wrong place, but be rest assured, tunes such as "The Earth's Crust" and "Crushing Defeat" offer up some crushing, slightly intricate arrangements, and Hetfield styled vocal ramblings to whet your appetite.
If you take Bangers II-Scum of the Earth for what it is, you can certainly have a headbanging good time. Mission accomplished for Barn Burner.
