Queen...the band that transcended all genres, whether it be glam rock, hard rock, heavy metal, pop, operatic romanticism, or aggressive prog-rock, they covered it all, and then some. By 1986, the band was at the peak of their powers, and this historic concert at the UK's Wembley Stadium in front of 100,000 fans cemented their legacy in rock and rock immortality. Just a few short years before the passing of lead singer Freddie Mercury, and during the tour for the album A Kind of Magic, Queen pulled out all the stops for this memorable concert, including many classics old and new, played with the fire and passion of a band that had more energy than groups ten years younger.
You want the classics, you got them, in the form of "Bohemian Rhapsody", "Crazy Little Thing Called Love", "Another One Bites the Dust", "Under Pressure", "We Will Rock You", "We Are the Champions", and "Radio Ga Ga." For the hardcore Queen fan, there are the staples like "Tie Your Mother Down", the rampaging "Tear It Up" or the heavy "One Vision", plus the anthem "Now I'm Here." What really will bring a smile though are the tunes that you would not expect to hear, like the earlier, more progressive cuts like "In the Lap of the Gods" (given a heavier treatment here), "Seven Seas of Rye" or the metal muscle of "Hammer to Fall." Perhaps the most poignant moments though are the duets between Mercury and guitarist Brian May, performing "Who Wants to Live Forever" and the touching "Love of My Life", both songs that will easily bring a tear to your eye.
As much as Live at Wembley Stadium is just a great DVD, it also is a somewhat painful experience to watch , as it is a harsh reminder of just what a loss Freddie Mercury's death was on all of us. He was a great singer, a great frontman, and more than anything just a fantastic personality.
Experience Freddie Mercury and Queen, at their peak, now available on DVD. Included are some neat extras, including a behind the scenes documentary on this historic event, as well as recent interviews with Brian May and Roger Taylor. About the only slight drawbacks here are the occasional grainy quality of the picture in certain spots of the concert, and John Deacon's poodle-y-do haircut (sorry John!) Otherwise the performances are fantastic, the sound is jacked up to 11, and the packaging on the DVD top notch. A must purchase!
