Foreigner: Acoustique
Fresh from a hugely successful bout of touring UK Arenas with Journey and Styx, Foreigner return with this collection of acoustic re-workings of most of their classic hits, plus one or two surprises along the way. On the aforementioned tour Kelly Hansen was in inspired form, making his way from the stage to interact with the crowd and consistently delivering a vocal performance that eclipsed those of the other singers on show. It is evident that, in Hansen, Mick Jones found the perfect replacement for Lou Gramm and he has truly given Foreigner a new lease of life.
Of course what Hansen (and for that matter other "replacement" singers) can't escape from is that vast back catalogue that remains familiar to millions around the globe. And rather than shying away from their past Foreigner are embracing it by revisiting the likes of "Juke Box Hero", "Cold as Ice" and Mick Jones vocal showcase "Starrider" with the addition of the acoustic twist. The whole "unplugged" concept may be considered a little stale in 2011 but fortunately so many of Foreigner's songs work well in the format that the album proves to be very enjoyable. A couple of new songs, "The Flame Still Burns" (a Mick Jones track that dates back to 1998 and the movie Still Crazy) and "Save Me", sit comfortably alongside the classics with Jones and Hansen joined by Jeff Pilson and Tom Gimbel (who provides some nifty sax on "Long, Long Way From Home"). Acoustique also includes Foreigner's very own tribute to Elvis as the quartet run through a breezy version of "That's All Right".
A deluxe 3 disc box set adds a disc of full electric re-workings of the big hits plus a recently shot DVD live from Chicago.
