Machine Head: Unto The Locust

Following The Blackening was always going to be challenging, after an album of that magnitude takes you around the world many times to play more than 300 shows including Wembley Stadium & Knebworth the idea of a follow up must be daunting.

Step up Machine Head, now regarded as the Godfathers of Modern Metal with the spectacular, skull crushing new album Unto The Locust. Like the title suggests this will consume all in its path, the introduction to 'I Am Hell' is certainly goose bump territory and will ensure violent pits in venues worldwide. This is an album of glorious brutality and monstrous metallic melody, the likes of which serve as testament to the determination and commitment of Machine Head to continually move forward. 'Be Still And Know' will have stadiums chanting 'And the sun will rise' all over the world, its heavy, catchy chorus encapsulated by Dave McClain's precise punchy drumming will have necks snapping in seconds. Rob Flynn's improved vocals sound sustained and angry, giving a real belief to the lyrics spouting fourth from his metal pull pit. With each track over the six minute mark and each one an epic in its own right the album simply glides by with sheer thrash metal fluidity. This is powerful stuff, which is personified on 'Pearls Before The Swine' a thrash fest demanding volume, gaining speed then stopping for some glorious interludes of harmony…utter brilliance. So the question is have Machine Head performed the impossible and matched or bettered The Blackening ? To put it in Heavy Metal biblical terms The Blackening was The Old Testament, now all hail Unto The Locust Machine Head's New Testament…Father Flynn awaits his congregation.
