A split that brings together two acts that represent their own branches of noise music, this split - which is simply entitled Split - is an interesting experience in extreme music with Breathe Knives representing noise industrial rock while Kataplexis is more traditional deathgrind.
Breath Knives' music is evolves around heavily distorted guitars and bass with the drums being programmed. The tracks are generally heavy with the drum beats never entering blastbeat territory (with the exception of the Kataplexis cover "False Flag"). There is a lot of experimentation with feedback - and absence of feedback - in the Breathe Knives tracks which I do find interesting and worth checking out. I am not a big fan of the programmed drums, though, which sound too mechanical to me, plus the beats themselves just do not appeal to me. Admittedly, this type of extreme noise music does not appeal to me, but I can hear that there are some interesting things going on on the Breathe Knives side, and fans of this type of music should definitely check it out.
Kataplexis represent grindcore and deathgrind and, musically, the tracks that they included on the album are slightly similar to Napalm Death, although Kataplexis' lyrics are, as the song titles indicate, less serious and politically oriented. While the Kataplexis tracks should definitely appeal to fans of death-grind, they are not really groundbreaking or anything like that. That being said, the Diamond Cutter remix version of "Fuckguy" is extremely funny with its use of vocoder effects and parody on contemporary hip pop and r 'n' b.
Fans of extreme noise rock will probably find this album very interesting, and they should definitely check this release out for themselves. One thing is for certain, the music is intense, dark and challenging.
