Williams, Jeff: Another Time

It has been a many years since drummer/composer Jeff Williams has put out a CD so his latest entitled Another Time comes as a welcome surprise. Playing with Williams are Duane Eubanks (trumpet), John O'Gallagher (alto saxophone) and John Hébert (bass).

Williams shows tremendous skill on the drum kit throughout Another Time as his timely fills and rolls flow beautifully from one song to the next. His playing is both subtle and frenetic depending on the needs of the composition. Light as a feather cymbal taps or quick tempo rhythmic bursts, this album is a drummer's delight. It does not matter whether his playing is in the background or up front leading the way, this musician can play with the best of them. Williams also gives the other musicians enough space so they have their turn to shine and they take full advantage. The saxophone and trumpet are equally important here, whether in succinct unison or clashing head on, these players know their way around their respective instruments. On the slower paced "Purple, Blue and Red" the music slows to a crawl before the alto sax breathes new life into the soundscape. On the crafty "Under the Radar" daft cymbal work and understated bass rips up the background while dissonant trumpet squelches out the notes. It may not sound pretty but there is no doubting the talent behind the music. Last but not least is the bass playing of Hébert who also provides a few highlights like in the slow burning jazz of "Go Where You're Watching" where his solo bass shines like a beacon of light.

My only complaint with Another Time is the lack of catchy hooks. Instead, the band opts for a more discordant approach. That is not to say there are no melodies here, they are just harder to find and not readily apparent. Immediacy is not what this album is about.

So, if outstanding musicianship is what you seek and do not mind having to dig for the occasional melodic moment, Another Time is a jazz album that you need to hear. Released on Whirlwind Recordings.
