Flower Eaters: The Spectre Loiters
Flower Eaters are a London based duo consisting of Thomas Perryman (guitars, synthesizers, bass, vocals) and Leonardo Pérez (drums). The Spectre Loiters is their debut release. The duo's former band The Unlimited Dream Company disbanded in 2009, hence the beginning of Flower Eaters.
Both musicians are sound engineers and the sound on the new album is quite good. The music offered is in the tradition of psychedelic space rock and at times it is quite heavy. Not really metal, however the band does let their Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple influences show through occasionally.
The music is built upon walls of guitar and synths with the emphasis on melody rather than 'look at how fast we can play' showboating although there is little doubt these guys are talented musicians.
Our journey begins with "Vitamin BC", all distorted guitars and winding synths with some off kilter rhythms and tempos. Their psychedelic and space rock roots shine through right from the start.
With the sonically rich "Hyperspace Mood" the space vibe continues as the keyboards come through in waves adding textural layers giving the song an electronic feel.
The intensity continues with the intriguingly titled "Bend the Rainbow", another psychedelic synth/guitar workout. This is the first and only time we hear the vocals of Perryman and although he has a pretty good voice I did find it to be somewhat buried in the mix.
The trippy "Jam 2.0" with its psychedelic wall of sound is in direct contrast with the electronic eeriness found in the Tangerine Dream-like "Microdots" with its backdrop of synths and trippy effects.
The album ends with "Hyperreality Doom", a heavier tune with tinges of Led Zeppelin. Grooving melodic guitar and synth lines are what this song is all about until the all too abrupt ending which, in my opinion, gives the song an unfinished quality.
Although there are one or two pitfalls, this is a very good disc overall, especially when you consider this is the band's debut. Hopefully the band will continue to evolve and fine tune their art form making their next album even better.
