Hotel Wrecking City Traders: Hotel Wrecking City Traders & Gary Arce
The Australian duo Hotel Wrecking City Traders (HWCT) formed in 2007 with the release of their debut EP, followed by Black Yolk in 2008. Their latest is entitled Hotel Wrecking City Traders & Gary Arce and is a two song 12 inch vinyl release. They have been labeled as noise/psychedelic rock which seems to be an apt description. They also add some spacey elements but mostly this is good old fashioned stoner music.
In the band are Toby Mathews (guitar) and Ben "Wrecker" Mathews (drums). Although only two songs both are over ten minutes so the band's penchant for improvisation is definitely heard. With only guitar and drums the music has a raw garage band edge that serves the duo's psychedelic escapades rather well.
"Coventina's Cascade" opens with a barrage of noisy guitar atmospherics before the drums really start to pound. At times I found the droning atmospheric sounds to be strangely hypnotic, having almost a trance-like effect.
With "Traverse of the Oxen" the band's sound is a little less intense. Mellow strumming and atmospheric washes of psych inflected guitar riffs take hold before the tempo increases and low rumblings of guitar unfold.
If you are into psychedelic/stoner rock HWCT should be an interesting listen. I look forward to hearing what the band does on a full length release. This one earns a solid three stars.
