" Jack of all trades, master of none "- popular saying
Like a college student who bounces around from subject to subject without picking a major, Jack Foster goes through a myriad of styles on this disc without ever settling into one. Since many of these students leave school to get jobs where they wear name tags and repeat lines like:" You want fries with that?" all day long, I would suggest to Mr Foster that he pick a style and develop it fully. The opening and closing numbers present an interesting twist on more traditional jazz and are the strong points of the disc. Throw in a few more killer blues-rock guitar solos like the outro to Feel It When I Sting and now you've got something. Insipid numbers like The Shy Ones and Dream With You can be dumped altogether. The pseudo hip-hop beats of Tiger Bone Wine will not win over progressive rock fans either. Trent Gardener ( Magellan, Explorers Club) has reworked some of the numbers on this disc and his patented 'Magellan Melody Lines' appear just a tad too overtly at times.
A disc which has a few strong points but which gets weighed down with an equal amount of lower points.
