After releasing a demo called Fjorvar ok Fyrnask , German act Fyrnask is presenting their debut full length, Bluostar. This duo is made of Fynrd-vocals, music and lyrics, and Blutaar also taking care of the lyrics, as well as the artwork.
The cover art got me thinking: "hmmm, this is pretty strange, but further investigation got me really interested. When I found out this was a German act doing black metal, well I was sold. With deeper attention and listening, it just confirms why I like black metal hailing from this part of Europe so much. Bluostar is a nearly lasting hour of good and high quality black metal art. This is not the ever hyper-blasting, rebellious or anti-Christ style of extreme music, massively produced. It does have its fast pace times here and there, but this album contains much more to be enjoyed. First, you have a mystical and ambient aura that floats around in more than once occasion. Then the vocals are far from the over the scream forced screams, but rather bear a ghostly and discrete edge most of the time. In certain places, these turn on a wicked style too. Fynrd's voice is as well at ease while doing epic choirs, whispers or simply using the spoken form; all of which done in their native tongue. The ambient approach is created by the use of keyboards, electronics and acoustic guitar work. The guitar playing is as varied as the moods on this disc. Besides the melodious organic acoustic tones already mentioned, you'll hear: clean versus distorted arpeggios, tremolo pickings and crushing/juicy riffs. Many of the compositions are long lasting pleasures including: "Evige Stier", "Ein eld I djupna" and "Bluostar". There are also a couple dark and ambient instrumentals like: " Eit Fjell av Jern", "Die Firnen Tiefen" and the unnamed closing track.
Chances are that if you're into high quality and varied black metal, Bluostar would be a very nice addition to your CD collection.
