The metal supergroup known as Charred Walls of the Damned, featuring drummer Richard Christy, vocalist Tim 'Ripper' Owens, bassist Steve DiGiorgio, and guitarist Jason Suecof, released a stellar debut back in 2010, and they've quickly followed it up with this sophomore effort titled Cold Winds on Timeless Days. While the debut was mostly EP length, this latest is a full fledged CD in every way, and again delivers solid heavy metal that is perfectly executed.
With members that have spent time in bands such as Death, Iced Earth, Sadus, Yngwie Malmsteen, Judas Priest, Testament, and Capharnaum, they would be hard pressed to produce anything other than a solid product as this CD. Classic metal, thrash, power & progressive metal styles mesh throughout, with Owens as always the main focal point as his high pitched wailing soars over thunderous rhythms and crushing riffs on tunes such as "Zerospan", "Timeless Days", "Cold Winds", and "Ashes Falling Upon Us". DiGiorgio's acrobatic bass lines lead in the wild "Forever Marching On", while Ripper absolutely tears it up on the textured rocker "The Beast Outside My Window". Through it all, Christy is a monster on the drum kit, delivering pounding yet incricate patterns while Suecof spews forth mountains of mammoth heavy metal riffs and sizzling leads. Hard not to fall prey to a killer metal anthem like "Admire the Heroes", which sees the entire band really firing on all cylinders.
If there's anything negative you can say about Cold Winds on Timeless Days, it's that there aren't a lot of songs that have immediate 'stand out' potential. The CD is more to be taken as a whole rather than as a collection of memorable tracks, which might hinder the enjoyment factor for some, but there's no denying that overall this is a very solid album from Charred Walls of the Damned, and a worthy follow-up to their excellent debut.
