For their sophomore release Edge of the Earth, Sylosis have lost lead singer Jamie Graham, but rather than replace him, lead guitarist Josh Middleton has also taken over the vocal role, and they've not lost a step. Edge of the Earth picks up right where their debut left off, and delivers solid melodic death metal & thrash that might not be high on originality, but is certainly well executed.
Middleton steers away from the occasional clean vocal that Graham would throw in, instead opting for a non-stop assault of growls and screams, but it's his crunchy riffs and solos that really are what makes Edge of the Earth. Tunes like "Sands of Time", "Precession", "A Serpent's Tongue", and "Beyond the Resurrected" are a riff lovers dream, plenty aggressive & violent, with just a touch of added keyboards for atmosphere. The drum work is especially nimble on the album, especially on "Altered States Of Consciousness" and the closing title track (with it's neat jazzy break in the middle.
Well played, catchy, and quite heavy, Edge of the Earth is another solid release from Sylosis, and shows that despite the personnel change, they are charging full steam ahead.
