It's really hard to get too excited about something like Filthy Habits, the latest Victory Records release from Farewell to Freeway. In the very crowded and stale metalcore scene, you almost can't separate any of the bands anymore, and Filthy Habits, for all its good points, sounds just like everything else we've heard in this sub-genre the last 5 years. Sure, there are plenty of beefy metal riffs, hardcore breakdowns, impressive lead fills, and a barrage of jackhammer drumming, but in the end, you can't help but feel like you've heard it all before. Vocals go back and forth between throaty growls and emo-ish clean passages, again, an all too familiar trend.
Despite the lack of any originality here, Filthy Habits does contain some catchy, headbanging moments, like "Liquor? I Don't Even Know 'Er", "Inside Influence", "Top Gun", and the crushing "Token Ain't Weezy". The thing is, unless you are a die hard metalcore fan that has to consume every new release, chances are you can skip right over this one and wait for the next All That Remains CD.
