If you like bands like Decrepit Birth, Cannibal Corpse, Obscura, Nile, and Spawn of Possession, than it's a safe bet that the technical death metal style of Embryonic Devourement will be a band you'll need to check out. Their previous CD for Deepsend Records, Fear of Reality Exceeds Fantasy was a blistering affair of gore drenched technical death metal, and Vivid Interpretations of the Void is no different.
Plenty of dazzling, if not noisy, guitar riffery & drum blasts flying about the mix from just about every angle here, which for some might just come across as 'complex for complex sake', but for those who like that intricate, proggy form of death metal, where the guitars, bass, and drums just weave around each other as if all are playing lead at the same time, complete with thunderous riffs and evil growls filling in the rest of the recipe, then you've certainly come to the right place. Some of the arrangements here are breathtaking in their complexity and brutality, especially on "Darken Thy Fluids" and "Eye Of The Horomatangi", so much so that your jaw will easily slide down to the floor at the dexterity of these players. However, complexity does not always make great songs, and you'll also notice that some of the tracks here tend to sound the same and lack anything overly memorable other than the technical expertise. However, if tech is your thing, a tune like "Gravitational Oblivion" is all you'll need to hear to get sucked right in!
Despite it's slight limitations, Vivid Interpretations of the Void is an amazing display of technical death metal, and shows a band that's almost ready to play with the big boys.
