Recorded at Sweden Rock Festival on October 6th, 2010 in front of 25,000 rabid fans, Live in Black is a stunning 2CD set (a DVD of the show is also included in the actual set, but we were not given that for review purposes) from Norwegian hard rock/metal vocalist Jorn Lande and his band. Featuring songs from throughout his solo career, the setlist is packed with plenty of gems and makes for a high octane listening experience as well as a solid overview of Lande's material.
The guitars are crankin', the rhythms pounding, the melodies memorable, and Jorn's vocals simply outstanding-that's the formula throughout this stellar set. The man's vocals are like the ultimate combination of David Coverdale & Ronnie James Dio, and he favors a style of hard rock/metal that draws from the classic sounds of the 70's & 80's. Rip snorters such as "Shadow People", "Stormcrow", "Spirit Black", and the crushing "Road of the Cross" burst with energy and fire, Jorn's majestic wailing soaring over a sea of crunchy guitar riffs and blazing lead solos, paying homage to the greats like Whitesnake, Dio, Deep Purple, Iron Maiden, and Black Sabbath. Guitarists Tore Moren & Tor Erik Myhre are both given solo spots to strut their stuff here, and show their skills they do, as both are fine players. Other highlights include the massively heavy "War of the Worlds" (featuring some killer pinch harmonics and a few lines from the classic Rainbow tune "Man on a Silver Mountain"), "Blacksong", and the dramatic "Soul of the Wind", but in reality this is a killer set with no weak points, the band is on fire and Jorn totally on top of his game.
