Slash: Made In Stoke 24/7/11
Slash, one of the most legendary Hard Rock musicians of the last 25 years. Everyone on the planet knows the name Guns 'N Roses and Slash was the lead guitar driving force of that beast and here we find Slash, the solo artist, with a new live album; Made In Stoke 24/7/11 (Armoury Records). This double CD features Slash & Co. recorded live in his birthplace, Stokeon Trent, UK., ripping through a 21 song setlist that spans his entire career (GnR, Snake Pit/Solo & Velvet Revolver). Caught in great form, Slash's band sounds awesome all the way through this double CD set playing most of the favorites that you might expect from the man.
Slash's band features the vocals of Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge) who has the task of filling the vocal shoes of several HIGH profile vocalists during this 21 song set list. Touring behind the highly acclaimed album, Slash, which featured several different singers on each track, Myles Kennedy has thetask of pulling off the vocals of all of those singers, NOT to mention the iconic vocals of Mr. W. Axl Rose and Mr. Scott Weiland. Kennedy pulls off ALL of those singers pretty god damned well, as well as being able to have his own indentify (even though the vibrato in his voice gets on my nerves after a while).Kennedy has gotten a lot of praise in the press and the guy does deserve it and this CD set is a great document of his abilities and how on fire Slash's band is, in general.
Opening up with the killer track, "Been There Lately" from his Slash's Snake Pit days, Slash & Co. come out swinging and hit a home run with the first pitch. This is a high tempo tune that sets the pace for the night and gets the crowd buzzing right off the bat. My favorite Guns 'NRoses tune, "Nightrain" is an excellent 2nd song in the set, keeping things at a breakneck pace for the English fans. Also on CD 1 are stand out renditions of "Back From Cali", "Starlight", "Ghost',"Rocket Queen" and an excellent version of "Civil War". The band is firing on all cylinders and this is an obviously "real"live recording not like most of the classic "live" records in history. The songs flow right into each other, without fade ins or fadeouts, which is totally refreshing and allows you to really "feel"the live performances and be a part of the live crowd responses. A highlight in Slash's guitar playing is definitely the song, "Nothing To Say",where Slash lets loose on the heaviest and most ominous song in his catalog. The solo in "Nothing To Say" is just on fire!
CD 2 opens with the Lemmy co-penned track, "Doctor Alibi", as the band runs through more solo and Snake Pit tunes. But of course more GnR classics like, crowd pleaser, "Sweet Child O' Mine", "Paradise City", and "Mr. Brownstone" are to follow, as is the Velvet Revolver fave, "Slither".In the mix Slash also gets to stretch out a bit in a guitar spotlight solo. CD2 is comprised of 11 tracks of full on Rock n Roll as only Slash has been able to provide since the mid 80's. The crowd sings along on pretty much each and every song and the fantastic live production is an excellent testament to the entire live experience.
Made in Stoke 24/7/11 is a great live capture of a high octane Rock n Roll band sounding awesome. Slash plays everything pretty much note for note, just like you want him to play and never disappoints. The vocal stylings of Myles Kennedy are a featured element of this band, but his entire band, bassist Todd Kerns, drummer Brent Fitz and guitarist Bobby Schneckare all on point as well. This is a rock solid band and it comes across live. There is also a special edition CD/DVD set available from this show that Slash-oholic's will want to pick up. If you are a fan of Slash and the career that he has amassed, this CD is for you. It is a kick ass live record.
