Throne of Katarsis: Ved Graven

Love your Norwegian black metal old school, with raw production qualities and chilling, brutal musicality? Then you've come to the right place. Ved Graven is the latest Candlelight Records release from Throne of Katarsis, and once again another solid collection of underground sounding black metal that pays homage to the classic releases of acts like Immortal, Darkthrone, Mayhem, Gorgoroth, Burzum, and Emperor. If you take a look at these guys, you can see they take their stuff pretty seriously with all the corpse paint, spiked wristbands, dark clothing and the such, and it totally comes across in their music. Ved Graven is another solid release from them, and it won't be long before the black metal legions really have to start taking notice.

Many of the tracks here are somewhat lengthy, with an epic yet totally brutal feel. While they don't do the symphonic route that many other modern black metal bands seem to fall into, there are moments of atmosphere here created by acoustic guitars, lilting electric guitar, and the occasional keyboard, spliced in amidst the pummeling. "Av Dypets Kulde" has an almost doomy feel, with plenty of slow, crushing riffs and tortured vocals, but then the band goes the complete opposite extreme on " The Holy Remains The Weak", a blast beat & tremelo picked black metal rager complete with ominous atmosphere and evil vocal rasps. Throughout the musicianship is top notch, and the production values are cold & raw, just the way they should be for an old school affair like this.

Of course, Ved Graven isn't perfect-there are times the vocals sound like they are coming out of a wind tunnel, and a few of the tracks tend to meander a bit (a trait the bands previous releases also suffered from), but overall this is a great slice of old school Norwegian black metal from a band that knows how to do it right.
