I Wash My Soul In The Stream Of Infinity is the second release from Swedish space rock/psychedelic/prog act My Brother the Wind. With six mostly lengthy tracks of far reaching experimentation and textures, the line-up of Nicklas Barker (Electric guitar, Acoustic 12 string guitar, Mellotron). Mathias Danielsson (electric guitar & Electric sitar), Ronny Eriksson (Bass & Hammond organ), and Tomas Eriksson (Drums), My Brother the Wind will certainly appeal to fans of Ozric Tentacles, Anglagard, Anekdoten, and Oresund Space Collective. Opening cut "Fire! Fire!" is a rambling, oozing miasma of sound driven by churning guitar, Mellotron, and Hammond, certainly a feast for space rock lovers, while "Pagan Moonbeam" features sitar and organ for a creepy psychedelic Middle Eastern feel. Ominous Mellotron and booming bass riffs permeate the haunting "The Mediator Between Head And Hands Must Be The Heart", and "Torbjörn Abelli" is a more pastoral number dripping with atmosphere and textures, influences seemingly coming from Genesis, King Crimson, and Anglagard. Nice job of building tension on this one as the track progresses, and though it's not complex at all, the waves of keyboards & guitar make for a dreamy landscape of sounds. The more upbeat & quirky "Under Crimson Skies" is the first real sign of 'prog-rock' on the CD, and the band does a great job of weaving guitar, bass, and keyboard lines around while the drums lay down some intricate rhythms underneath. Too bad it loses a little steam towards the second half of the song. Closer "I Wash My Soul In The Stream Of Infinity" is a moody, atmospheric number, sounding a bit like a meeting of The Moody Blues and Pink Floyd, and features some nice keyboards and lilting guitar patterns.
I don't know, I think I was expecting to be more moved by I Wash My Soul In The Stream Of Infinity. Despite some beautiful moments (and there are plenty) too much of this CD just meanders endlessly and lacks focus. Just when you think the band are onto something brilliant, they drift off into droning space rock or psychedelic floating that goes nowhere. I'm sure a lot of folks will really dig this, and there is plenty to like here, but I just don't find what My Brother the Wind have created on this album warrants repeated spins, as to these ears there's not a lot memorable or engaging on a consistent basis.
