World Under Blood is the melodic death metal side project of CKY frontman Deron Miller, and their latest release on Nuclear Blast, Tactical, is surprisingly pretty damn solid. Honestly, I wasn't expecting much here, as CKY certainly aren't a band that most folks into the extreme metal world pay any attention to, but Tactical sure did make me stand up and take notice. Granted, there's nothing groundbreaking or unique going on here, but as far as solid melodic death metal goes, this one's pretty good. Having superhuman drummer Tim Yeung (Divine Heresy) on board also helps out the cause here, and the rest of the band is rounded out by Risha Eryavac (bass) and
Luke Jaeger (additional guitars).
Miller does a fine job on the death metal growls & screams throughout, and he's pretty convincing in this capacity, especially on "Pyro-Compulsive", "Into the Arms of Cruelty", and the crushing "Purgatory Dormitory". He adds in his clean passages in spots, but they almost sound like throw-ins here and could have been left out to be honest. They workd the best on "Dead and Still in Pain", where the clean vocals are paired up with lethal screams alongside some thunderous rhythms and jagged riffs. He and Jaeger have managed to put together some impressive guitar riffs and solos throughout Tactival, and for someone who doesn't normally find themselves in the extreme metal world, you have to give Miller credit for coming up with some satisfying fare here.
Bottom line is, Tactical is pretty solid all around, and if you can forget for a minute that World Under Blood is a band involving the main member of alternative act CKY, then it's possible to have a lot of fun with this little slice of brutality.
