Eclectic in nature, Underwhelmed by Danish rockers Spit Rusty is classified simply as hard rock, but the listening experience is a slightly more complex one than one might expect.
The thing is that the four tunes on the EP display great variation, not jut in relation to each other but also internally in each song. The compositions themselves are not that complex, but Spit Rusty draw on a lot of different subgenres of hard rock and heavy metal, which means that you can experience the funky riffage associated with the likes of Aerosmith and the gothic melancholic melodicism of the likes of Paradise Lost in the same song (which is exactly the case of 'Those Days', which also contains a sludge rock riff, adding to the sense of variation).
'Drift Alone' is more of a groove metal track, featuring some crushingly heavy riffage, while 'We Will Be OK' contains elements of 90s alternative rock/metal but morphs into a heavy affair towards the end (it also features a Jew's harp, and - guess what - it sounds pretty cool), and 'Stick to the Trails' is an uplifting rocker which features a couple of perhaps unexpected changes.
It is this sense of variation which is the greatest strength of this release - especially because, the production ensures that there is coherence at all times throughout the EP. The variation is further reflected in Martin Arthur's quite unique vocals, which are all over the place (in this case, this is meant positively, because his performance as a singer is impeccable.
Fans of hard rock and heavy metal should definitely check out this release.
