Buck Satan And The 666 Shooters: Bikers Welcome! Ladies Drink Free

Hmmm...... It's never easy reviewing an album that verges on a "novelty" outing and so it proves with Ministry mainman Al Jourgensen's offshoot Buck Satan And The 666 Shooters, where authentic Country and Bluegrass gets all mangled up with electro-beats and tongue firmly planted in cheek lyrics. What makes this type of album hard to assess is that there's absolutely no doubting that this is actually a damn good shot of fun and catchy as hell. However whether I will in truth listen to it more than once or twice before it gets filed under "nice to have, but never listened to" I doubt very much.

Whether it is down to the constant drum machine rattle on Bikers Welcome! Ladies Drink Free, I'm not sure, but almost every second is frantically upbeat, with the rat-a-tat-tatlling picking everything up and making it run at full throttle. That trait makes for an initial impact that sees you thoroughly buy in to the whole vibe and spirit of the album, but subsequent visits turn out to be a little more arduous as the simple sameness of it all eventually wears you down. A stellar guest list aids Big Al, with Cheap Trick's Rick Nielson, Tony Campos from Static X and Mike Scaccia (Ministry/Revolting Cocks/Rigor Mortis), all joining the thigh slapping fun and games with some excellent performances. However their appearances also herald one of the more annoying aspects of this album, as before they fire out trademark solos, each of the guests are cheesily introduced during the song. I know it is authentic to the genre, but it doesn't half get on the nerves.

Some people will view me as a total sour-puss who lacks a bit of fun, but when it boils down to it, Buck Satan And The 666 Shooters sounds like a band I'd love to be in, but am not quite so keen to listen to....
