Two Dollar Grey: Saw You There

In 1993, the world experienced one of the greatest disasters ever known to modern man. No, I'm not talking about the Galeras tragedy in which nine people were killed by a sudden volcanic eruption deep in the mountains of Columbia. And if you thought I was referring to the death of 59 Turkish villagers resulting from a cataclysmic avalanche that blasted through the Eastern Blacksea Mountain Range, you'd also be wrong. The disaster that I am speaking of is the introduction of a species of music known as Nu Metal, a genre that has unmistakably influenced a generation of musicians who, in my opinion, are offering up little more than watered-down, commercialized versions of the metal that we all know and love.

Phoenix, Arizona's Two Dollar Grey has unfortunately fallen into this category of humdrum jock rock ala Five Finger Death Punch, Avenged Sevenfold, and Linkin Park that attracts muscle heads and UFC fans far and wide. And to be honest, I was quite surprised of this, given the band's assessment of the current state of music where they assert that "rock music has become stale and uninspired with all bands ultimately ending up sounding the same." It would seem to me that the five-piece should have taken their own advice prior to recording their debut EP Saw You There, a five-song effort that displays the band's ability to create predictable and mind-numbingly boring music that all too heavily relies on the not-so-stellar songwriting of lead vocalist Craig Daley.

Considering the decline of bands coming through the Valley of the Sun, Two Dollar Grey will most certainly garner a fair amount of attention amongst the Friday night bar crowd. However, if the band wishes to establish a dedicated national following of true rock enthusiasts, it would behoove them to rid themselves of the shackles that are their Nu Metal influences.
