Weinstein, Mark: El Cumbanchero

It has been said that "Cubans have always listened to music through their feet" and after listening to the new album from Flautist Mark Weinstein and arranger/pianist Aruán Ortiz I can understand why. El Cumbanchero is a delightful recording exploring Charanga, a style of Cuban music where flute is the lead instrument. The rest of the ensemble consists of strings, bass, piano and percussion.

The flute is front and center and Weinstein is a fabulous player taking Cuban music to new heights with his melodic explorations and infectious Latin rhythms. The album features nine tracks, including reworkings of Cuban/Puerto Rican composers and Ortiz's original compositions.

From the album opening title track with its lovely intro of flute and strings to the album ending "Contigo en la Distancia", a romantic ballad highlighted by melancholic flute and violin, it's all good.

Strings are also emphasized and there are no less than four violinists and two cello players. The flute and violin makes for a great combination. Check out the flamboyant "La Mulata Rumbera", featuring interesting violin rhythms and warm sounding flute, before the pitch gets higher and the intense percussion really adds to the Latin flavour.

In the melodic "Aruancó" the flute and percussion compete in a serious workout contrasting with the romantic piano of Ortiz.

There is no filler here as every song is played with emotion and gusto. El Cumbanchero is an inspired recording filled to the brim with Latin grooves and delightful salsa inspired melodies. If you like jazz, Latin, flute centered music or any combination thereof, give this one a listen as soon as you can. The album can be purchased from Jazzheads, an independent record label.
