Italian metal band The Moor have recently signed to Lion Music, home of many hot progressive metal bands and instrumental guitar shredders. Their debut self-titled EP has actually been in circulation for a few years, but with their recent signing Lion Music is giving this the full blown 'official' release treatment. To be honest, the band is kind of an odd fit for the label. The Moor have more in common with American hard rock/metal acts such as Disturbed, Creed, and Godsmack than they do with many of the bands & artists on the current Lion Music roster, but if the intention was to try and get some more mainstream minded listeners to check in, then it just might work.
Consisting of 5 songs, The Moor is full of modern metal grooves and catchy choruses, and surprisingly short on flashy instrumentation. Former Bleed in Vain members Enrico Longhin (vocals/guitar) and Davide Carraro (guitars) both put in admirable performances here, and tracks like "Antikythera", "The Road" and "Covered" are decent enough songs, but they just tend to sound so 'middle of the pack' and don't really do much to differentiate themselves from so much of the popular heavy fare that is currently out there. "Venice" and "Before Abigail" just fail to offer anything different from what countless bands struggling to gain mainstream exposure are already doing, and to be honest, from a label that has promoted virtuosity and progressive nature in their roster for years, there's nothing of the sort here. Perhaps the upcoming full length from The Moor will reveal some newfound maturity and 'progression' in style or sound, but what you have here on this EP is formulaic and mostly forgettable US styled hard rock/metal that we've all heard before, and better.
