Rockford Heroes, The: Light Scares e.p.
The Rockford Heroes have offered a bit of an interesting proposition. How so, one asks? Well the band has decided to go down the avenue of quality verses quantity. From their blurb, they have decided to release only a few songs at a time, allowing them to really capitalise on their creativity. From this chosen path they believe that they will never release a full album. This is a bold step and I tip my hat to them for taking this stance, but in my eyes though based on the quality of these five songs offered, I believe that it is only a matter of time before they actually do release an album. It would be a shame if they didn't.
What we have here are newly recorded versions of their first demos which have only been digitally released. Although the recordings here may not be as polished as some of their peers, that no less detracts from what is on offer. The band has been influenced by such luminaries as Rainbow, Zeppelin, Styx, Kansas, Bon Jovi and Houston to name but a few, putting their own twist on these approaches.
What I can say is that if you like the approach of the intricate 70's bands and the polished contributions of the heady 80's then this will really appeal to you as the band does capture these sounds well. Dan Hultstrand delivers in the vocal department being a perfect complement to the melodic backdrop supplied by the rest of the contributing band members.
From the keyboard driven opening of Streets of Gold the band mean business as they present their perfect opening, a window into their world with its highly infectious and melodic backdrop. Embrace the Moonlight carries the torch being a no less powerful track as does the hi-energy Keeping Away From the Sun, a song that could have sat nicely on any Triumph album as Jonas Arvidsson really manipulates his guitar, gaining all the right and required tones.
Love Lies Bleeding plunders a more basic and metal approach with Hultstrand's vocals really keeping it focused, but in all honesty the proverbial money shots are definitely the opening Streets of Gold and the E.P closer Devil's Eyes, which in all honesty makes it a win win situation for the band.
This E.P really confirms that The Rockford Heroes is a band to keep an eye on. If they continue to release songs as good as this then their future is very bright indeed.
