Steel Panther does to glam what Spinal Tap did to metal. These guys with tongue firmly planted in cheek dish out a heaping helping of 80's style hair metal with the emphasis on sex, drugs, more sex and some very heady rock and roll. Sit back and listen to a blitz of what we loved about groups like Van Halen, Motley Crue, Ratt...etc... with Steel Panther's over the top but hilarious take on the genre.
The meat of the disc (pun intended) will hit you somewhere straight below the belt buckle as they deliver more variations on the term for unlawful carnal knowledge then the Kama Sutra. It is definitely time to lock up the daughters when the Steel Panther bus rolls into town.
With all the delicacy of Gallagher and his sledge-o-matic, the band gets this roller coaster ride started with a bang literally as "Supersonic Sex Machine" relates the way of life in the year 6969 as stated in the intro to the disc. This anthem that reminds me of Queen's "Keep Yourself Alive" has all the musical qualities that we loved about this style and as you will find with this whole disc, it will bring a smile to the face much like when you hear a dirty joke.
My wife had to pick me up off the floor as I about bust a gut on hearing these guys and their hero worshiping ode "Just Like Tiger Woods". How can you not enjoy the double entendre of "If you wanna be like Tiger Woods/Filling all the divots in the neighborhood" and that is just a brief sample of what is some real comic genius put to music. Sure it is pure bathroom humor or maybe something from Bevis and Butthead but still it is impossible not to enjoy this kind of trashy metal.
The band does have a tender side as shown in their version of a gentle power ballad called "If You Really Really Love Me". I will leave it to your imagination what they might come up with as a way for the women to prove their devotion. Lets just say that the video for this one might will probably be unsuitable for minors. They do provide you with a second power ballad that is straight from the heart I am sure. "Why Can't You Trust Me" is a reflective piece about the inner turmoil a guy faces and how in the eyes of Steel Panther you can rectify the situation. The line "Oh, you better treat me with a little respect/Before I go Chris Brown and punch you in the neck" shows you how they might handle this delicate situation.
The rest of the album pretty much follows this theme and does so in a terrific throw back to the hair metal days. "That's What Girls Are For" sounds like it came off a Def Leppard album. "Gold Digging Whore" sounds like a bit of Ratt & Roll, while the tender piano ballad that ends the album, "Weenie Ride" has the subtle juxtaposition of a Frank Zappa penned song. All in all this is as much fun as you can have with this kind of party disc.
So they are not politically correct and the disc is pretty much one joke with a lot of variations. It also may cause you some pain as you will be keeping it inside while trying to make those nearby think that you are not enjoying it. Come on and let your Balls Out and have some fun with this terrific bit of comic relief blended with some dynamite rock and roll.
