From Italy comes melodic/hard rock act Myland, and their latest release is the enjoyable Light Of a New Day. Led by drummer Paulo Morbino, the band is rounded out by guitarist Hox Martino, vocalist Franco Campanella, bassist Fabian Andrechen, and keyboard player David I. Light Of a New Day is a safe bet for anyone into Toto, Giant, Hurricane, and Journey, as the music here is loaded with soaring vocals, catchy melodies, tasty guitar work, and melodic keyboards. Don't expect anything too heavy, or even remotely progressive, just solid, melodic hard rock with all the trimmings. "Flying Higher" is a fun rocker with plenty of hooks and driving riffs, while "Living In the Magic" features some explosive guitar work that will appeal to all the rockers and fretboard fanatics in the house. Vocalist Campanella has a voice that sits somewhere between Jeff Scott Soto, Kip Winger, and Journey singer Arnel Pineda, and he really shines on some of the more ballady material, especially "Dancing In the Moonlight". That being said, there are perhaps one too many ballads here, and a tune like "Never Stop Screaming Rock", despite being a fun 80's styled rocker, is quite dated sounding and will have limited appeal to anyone who didn't live and breathe 80's rock and metal. "Hey You" falls into a similar trap, with its syrupy keyboards and Poison/White Lion/Winger styled vocals... it all just seems like something out of a time machine, which will be either a good or bad thing depending on how you feel about this sort of stuff.
Light Of a New Day is a fun, retro look back at 80's melodic hard rock, though in reality there were a lot of bands who did this style better back in the day. Myland certainly have given this their all, so if you don't mind a little taste of the past, consider taking a listen to this one.
