Mistheria: Keys Of Eternity

A quick look through the performance discography of Italian keyboard player extraordinaire Mistheria (Giuseppe Iampieri), will uncover collaborations with everyone in the Rock and Metal genres from Rob Rock and Neil Zaza to Chris Catena and Bruce Dickinson. Add to that numerous solo albums where Progressive and Symphonic Rock are masterfully melded into intricate keyboard workouts and you would think that it would be reasonable to expect Keys Of Eternity to follow in the same mould. However with a classical training on his chosen instrument behind him, Mistheria has on many occasions chosen to play live performances which highlight this side of his psyche and with Keys Of Eternity, he has chosen to capture this aspect of his repertoire on disc as well.

With only keyboards to illustrate his emotions. Mistheria proves himself to be not only a phenomenal instrumentalist, but also one who has perfect poise, conveying his feelings through broadly classical styles pieces which capture the imagination with their beauty. Yes, in execution this is far, far removed from the Symphonic style fans of this man will be used to, but in composition it has to be said that many similarities can be drawn. Having said that Metal devotees will very possibly be completely mystified by what they find here, but I have to say that while not an album I will listen to on a regular basis, there is so much subtle and heartfelt emotion put into these ten songs that it is impossible not to be swept up in the beauty of it all. Mistheria does vary things a little in places with the clipped synth work on "Perigenia" and "Teslina Sonata" reminding strongly of Vangelis, while "Memory" fuses the synth style to the more overtly classical style of the rest of the album.

I've no doubt that Keys Of Eternity will be a step too far into another world for many Mistheria fans, but that doesn't stop it from being a beautiful, captivating album.
