Pharaoh: Bury the Light

Pharaoh by their own admission make American heavy metal and make no bones about it – and so they shouldn't as Bury the Light is a tasty piece of metal. It won't stop the earth spinning but it is more than worth seeking out if you're in the mood for some headbanging. I'm not sure if the band are worried in some way about this release as they say in the accompanying notes that, "Bury the Light may require some patience from a listener more attuned to PHARAOH's tradition of rousing, brilliant heavy metal, as found on its 2003 debut, After the Fire, and on the 2006 follow-up The Longest Night." There's nothing to be frightened of her but much to enjoy and admire such as the epic "The Year of the Blizzard" or the wonderful "Castles in the Sky" (guest solo by Mike Wead of Mercyful fate/King Diamond.)

"The Spider's Thread" has guitarist Matt Johsen all over it (actually the whole album does but you know what I mean) and his playing especially as the track cruises towards the end is wonderfully fluid. This is followed by the metal fest that is "Cry" and the middle of the album is remarkably solid which is often not the case.

Pharaoh's main achievement here is that they have managed not to get stuck in a kind of Euro-metal parody and have forged a very clear identity for themselves in a world of identikit bands.
