Eliza and the Strange: Eliza and the Strange

Eliza and the Strange are a name wholly unknown to me and have a mercifully small press bio but here are the salient points from it. "Eliza and the Strange is a distorted whirlwind of heavy bass, dirty organ, piercing guitar and wailing vocals. Their style is dark, voodoo-like and screams rock n' roll with an intense live performance." Apparently their work would appeal to fans of Band of Skulls, The Death Weather, Them Cooked Vultures & The Raconteurs, none of whom appear anywhere in my collection.

The first thing to say is that there is nothing progressive about Eliza and the Strange as a band or as an album and I cannot imagine that they would be a first choice for many Sea of Tranquillity readers out there but they really do make a bit of a racket – in a good way -" She Ain't Pretty" for instance followed by "I'm Not a Machine" could easily wake the neighbours from their slumbers thanks to the lowdown dirty guitars and solid rhythm section but equally because of the beguiling voice of Eliza (White) herself. Best of all this is a short record which doesn't outstay its welcome and is a concise welcome to the band that should be able to carve out a niche for themselves in the indie press.
