I've gotta be honest, I've never heard of the band Crack Up before. This German band were apparently signed to Nuclear Blast back in 1997, and Heads Will Roll, their third album, was released in 1998. Now, thanks to Metal Mind Productions, Heads Will Roll is once again available to the metal masses.
For the most part, Heads Will Roll is a pretty fun album, but you can quickly see why Crack Up never really made it. These guys just can't decide whether they are a serious death metal band, a punk act, a sludge-ified Black Sabbath clone, or a death/black 'n' roll act along the lines of Children of Bodom. They don't take themselves too seriously, which is a good thing, and despite the upbeat and fun nature of most of these pretty heavy and rousing tracks, you almost WANTED them to take matters MORE seriously. There's just a lighthearted nature throughout too many of these tracks that starts to wear thin after repeated listening, that gives the entire album a real cliched feeling. Despite that, plenty of heavy riffs, catchy songs, and brutal death growls abound, and in all honesty, there's plenty worse out there you can turn your attention to. I would have liked to see the band focus more on the stoner/doom part of their style, which they do quite well, but there's more fast paced death 'n' roll & punk flavored material, which, after a while, all starts to sound the same.
Like I said, you can do much worse than Heads Will Roll, an album that won't go down in history as the most original or groundbreaking record in metal history, but is fun for what it is.
