Peopletank: Peopletank
"Post-contemporary grunge" trio Peopletank certainly presents its debut, Peopletank, with good intensions and a lot of humility. Formed in Poulsbo, WA, the group currently enjoys an active touring schedule in Seattle, and it's clear that they're happy for any and all attention they get. Unfortunately, my task here is not to judge their character; it's to judge their music, and sadly, it amounts to little more than a dull, poorly produced and annoying rip-offs of legendary 90s rock bands like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and the Black Crowes.
Really, there isn't much more to say than that. The seven tracks amount to twenty-three minutes of repetitious distortion, amateurish rhythms, vocals that attempt to resemble Chris Robinson and Eddie Vedder, and pieces that barely qualify as songs. The musicianship, songwriting, production, and singing are about as basic as rock music can get, plain and simple.
There's always been a fine line between homage and emulation, and regardless of which end Peopletank fits in at, its self-titled debut is fairly worthless and tiresome. The simple fact is that grunge has been done to death already, and with masterpieces like Neil Young's Harvest and Pearl Jam's Ten, it's likely already seen its greatest records. If they continue in the same style, the trio has a long way to go before they can even dream of achieving the same grandeur.
