Incredible String Band: The Lost Broadcasts (DVD)

Out of some strange vault, this rarely seen live performance from German television is coming back to the surface. The band was formed way back in 1966 by Robin Williamson, Clive Palmer and Mike Heron. After the departure of Clive, bassist Danny Thompson and Christina McKechnie joined the bad. These broadcasts were recorded in 1970.

You can see three songs and one interview on this DVD. The songs are actually the most enjoyable parts as they reflect the mood and musicianship of these people. The interview, done in English is unfortunately overdubbed in German. Opening track "Irish Jigs" has all one would expect from this type of songs. You can hear violin, bass, mandolin and see a barefoot young lady playing spoons and dancing the jig. A nice mixture of folk and hippie vibe. Track number two, "Empty Pocket Blues" is my favorite tune here. Mostly due to the fact of having two acoustic guitars playing the blues with a duo of female vocalists. The mood is very casual; they all appear to have a good time and the girls seem to be high… The last song, "Everything is Fine Now" features more acoustic guitars, mandolin, organ, male and female vocals. This one is catchier and is a very happy melody. During the interview done in their town of Glasgow and shows various scenery. They have included concert excerpts; all of them being somewhat comical and entertaining.

The Lost Broadcasts is one of those fun and unexpected type of promos that occasionally land on our desk, to our greatest pleasure.
